How to promote a bar: 8 theme night ideas people remember

Some bars fill up on their own on a Saturday and look empty on a Thursday, even with the same music, the same drinks and the same staff. The difference is almost never the product. It’s that people know what’s happening at that bar each night and want to be there.

That’s a well-run theme night: a regular plan people recognize, look forward to and recommend. Here are eight ideas that work in Latino bars and lounges and, most importantly, how to promote them.

First: what makes a night work

Before the ideas, the four pieces every night needs:

  • An easy-to-remember name. "Bachata Thursday" is understood instantly. "Special night" says nothing.
  • Clear music or activity. People need to know what they’re coming for.
  • A specific offer. A drink of the night, a bucket deal or a perk for those who arrive early.
  • Consistency. A night takes weeks to catch on. If you change it every Friday, it never becomes a regular plan.

1. Bachata or salsa night with a class

A short class at the start of the night, with an instructor, attracts people who wouldn’t come just to drink. When the class ends, you already have a full dance floor and the vibe set for the rest of the night.

2. Spanish-language karaoke

It’s one of the easiest nights to set up and one that generates the most content: people record, share and tag. Every video is free advertising for your bar.

3. Guest DJ night

A different DJ every week or every month gives people a reason to come back: "who’s playing this Friday?". Plus, every DJ brings their own crowd and promotes it on their social media.

4. Live music night

A local merengue, salsa or bachata band turns a regular night into an event. It works especially well if you announce it early with a flyer that features the artists.

5. The big game on a big screen

Baseball, soccer, boxing. Big sporting events fill bars on their own, but only if people know your bar shows them. Post the game schedule and pair it with a bucket or appetizer deal.

6. Dominoes or game night

For quieter days, a dominoes night with small prizes attracts groups that stay for hours and order several rounds.

7. Ladies’ night or group night

A perk for groups that arrive together, especially before a certain time, brings people in earlier and fills the place sooner. A bar that looks full at ten attracts the people arriving at eleven.

8. Birthday-of-the-month night

A set night each month to celebrate everyone with a birthday, with perks based on group size. Every birthday guest brings their friends, and many of them didn’t know you yet.

How to promote the night so it fills up

The idea is half the work. The other half is making sure people find out in time. This is the plan we recommend:

  1. The flyer, early. Post it at least five days ahead, not the same day. Include the night’s name, date, time, artists and the offer.
  2. Reels from the previous night. Nothing sells a night better than seeing people enjoying it last week.
  3. Local ads. A small Instagram and Facebook campaign targeted to your area and your crowd’s ages, running in the days before.
  4. Messages to your list. An SMS or WhatsApp the day before to people who’ve already come. It’s the cheapest reminder and the one that works best.
  5. Artists promote too. Ask the DJ or the band to share the flyer and tag your bar.

How to know if the night is working

Don’t settle for the feeling that "the vibe was good". Compare attendance, the night’s sales and how many times the code or promotion was used each week. If after six to eight weeks the night isn’t growing, change one piece at a time: the offer, the time or the music, not everything at once.
